Tea Party Birthday Ideas – Tea Party, Right this Way…

When I sat down and put pen to paper and produced my party plan, I was sure to include all the regular stuff, invitations, decorations, food and beverages, activities and loot bags. But the one nagging question was how do I plan a child’s tea birthday party and keep it affordable and fun?

Invitations - There are lots of wonderful tea party birthday invitation ideas out there that include designing a card in the shape of a teapot, teacup or party hat or even a charming tea party scene. Take a picture of the birthday girl at a tea party table surrounded by all her stuffed animal guests, write the party information on the back and use the picture as the invitation. Or muster up your creativity and use a paper table dolly with the solid middle as the invitation area.

Invitations can be created by using decorative graphics and fonts or by simply using hard card stock, wrapping or construction paper and outlining the details by hand. In addition to designing and creating the invites, there are numerous invitation ideas online that can easily be downloaded and printed (for free). It is always important to remember to include the start and finish times, tea party date, tea party location and any costume requests.

Decorations - One of the best ways to set the mood for a tea party birthday celebration is decorations. Decorations add fun and excitement to the room while at the same time creating a beautiful setting. Your imagination will go a long way in creating the scenario and you won’t even have to make a big financial investment.

A floral tablecloth enhanced with a small flower centerpiece or some fresh cut flowers from the garden will set the tone. Decorate the room with tea party bits and pieces including teacups, teapots, tea spoons and the like. Enhance your space with balloons and streamers, banners and paper flowers and be sure to play serene tea party music in the background. And you’ll be number one in the eyes of the birthday girl when you answer the door dressed to the nines or appropriately dressed as the waiter and direct the guests to the party area in character. Sign up the other family members to help and make this a tea party to be remembered.

Food and Beverages – The most delicious part of any party, particularly a tea party, is what you eat and drink. Food and drinks are always a great way to create a picturesque tea party setting for all the guests to enjoy.

Really there is no reason to only have hot tea at your tea party, especially if you are throwing the party for younger guests. So put out as many varieties of teas as you wish including herbal and iced, and don’t forget all the yummy fixings. Beside tea there are lots of other options available, lemonade, punch, apple juice, hot cider, as well as hot chocolate and juice.

When it comes to tea party birthday food, forget the burger and fries! Tea parties are the perfect place to feel just a little bit grown up and the food should reflect that! First and foremost, keep it simple and bite size. What comes to mind when you think tea party is finger sandwiches. Definitely a tea party must have. You can make a variety and display them on a platter along with some other delicious items like cheese and crackers, cubed (or kebab) fruit, animal crackers, petit fours, veggie sticks, chocolate dipped strawberries and pinwheel sandwiches. Really when it comes to food and drinks, the sky is the limit.

Activities – When I help plan kid’s birthday parties for family and friends, there is a great piece of advice regarding party activities that I like to share; keep it simple, really simple. So in the spirit of this piece of advice, I would suggest when the guests arrive direct them to the tea party birthday dress up area. A tea party really isn’t the same unless we are dressed appropriately, in tea party gear. By having a box filled with “old” party apparel, costume jewelry, hats, gloves, tiaras and wigs, you will help each and every guest get into the spirit of the day. If you don’t have these old items on hand, you can easily stock up at your local thrift store.

Crafts are a great way to get the kids together and calm the crowd. Edible jewelry supplies can be easily be put together by you and then necklaces and bracelets can be made by the kids. Kids will love making their own jewellery and then getting to eat it too! Use round candies, fruit loop cereal and licorice. It’s a simple but a fun idea. Also in line with the theme is getting the kids to make hand held fans, using construction paper and items found around the house, fabric string, buttons, feathers and beads. One mother shared how she pre-purchased knit hats and offered various materials like feathers, bows, beads, textile and the adults helped with gluing it all on. When it was time for tea, the girls all sat down at the table wearing their new hats and a smile from ear to ear.

There are tons of great tea party birthday ideas available to assist throwing the picture perfect party celebration. All you have to do is go online and look. Do some research and take what works for you and make the ideas your very own!
