Are Good Event Planning Careers Still out There?

The seal of the United States Department of Labor

If you’ve been watching the news lately it’s becoming harder and harder to predict what in the heck is going to happen in the jobs market over the next 12 to 18 months. Which begs the question – are there still good event planning careers? And if so who is hiring and what region could I expect to get employed faster. These may seem like simple questions at the onset, however we are now living in a world where Democrats have proposed higher spending cuts then Republicans have even requested. And Republicans are about to say no to a payroll tax cut that the Democrats have proposed. Seriously have the gods gone crazy?

Event Planning Careers Will Flourish in Spite of the Politicians

Watching the recent debt ceiling debate unfold in Washington I couldn’t help think that we have elected a bunch of children. Doesn’t matter which side of the aisle that you sit on, left or right, it seems like these politicians weren’t concerned about creating jobs for you and me in the least. And wasn’t that all that we were hearing about before the last congressional elections? And just how many job bills have been introduced since the last election? As of last check the unemployment rate in the United States is 9.1% (July 2011, US Department of Labor). Seriously folks, it’s high time we put pressure on our elected officials to do something about the current job situation.

In spite of all the recent childish behavior at the state and national levels the outlook for event planning careers is expected to increase 16% through 2018. This information was dissected from the US Department of Labor. While accurate I write this with a word of caution. These projections did factor in the economic downturn from 2008. But right now we’re hoping that we do not have a double dip recession. There’s really no way of telling whether this will happen or not. The only thing I would suggest is that you don’t listen to a politician talk about employment outlook- research opinions from economists instead.

Event planning careers come in many shapes and forms. The initial increase of employment in this industry will most likely come from individuals setting up their own event planning career companies. With the larger event planning companies, new hires  will likely be a little slower paced as these businesses struggle through the uncertain times. However it’s not that there are no event planning careers out there it’s just that you have to do a little more digging than usual to find the good ones. And rest assured, in spite of our current political climate, our economy will rebound.

Same Sex Wedding Planning Means Big Bucks To New York State

On June 24th New York became the 7th State to allow same sex couples to marry. As soon as the Marriage Equality Act was signed by Governor Cuomo, news outlets started reporting on what that would mean for the state’s economy. Same sex wedding planning began almost immediately. For those that thought that this legislation would be a disaster for the state, they may want to think again.

Same Sex Wedding Planning Companies are Seeing Revenues Increase

It looks like there will be no looking back as far as the state’s economy is concerned. Already there are reports that same sex wedding planning will contribute about $180 million to the economy over the next three years alone. According to a Forbes.com article, gay wedding planning companies are already reporting on the additional business coming their way. To many of these wedding planning companies the new law is certainly something they welcome. Especially in this economy.  NYC & Company, New York City’s official tourism marketing agency is already underway with a new marketing campaign – NYC I DO. The Marriage Equality Act is expected to add thousands of new jobs to the tourism industry.

Will Politics Have an Impact on Gay Wedding Planning?

So if this new legislation is bringing welcome relief to New York’s economy, then why are only 7 states allowing same sex marriages? Religion? Unfortunately the answer appears to be “politics”.  While a lot of religious groups do take a definite stand against same sex marriages, most of the main stream religions tend to be more tolerant towards same sex couples. Several even allow openly gay ministers. In politics, sadly, there seems to be more of mind set that you’re either for it or you’re against it. Ironically, New York’s deciding vote in favor of this landmark bill was cast by a Republican from Buffalo. A prominent ex-politician, Hillary Clinton (she states her status to be a civil servant now), has called this vote “historic”.

“So far as the United States is concerned and our foreign policy, and our values . . . gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” Clinton told gay foreign affairs workers.

So perhaps politics is the reason only 7 states currently allow gay marriage.  As other states start seeing the economic benefits that same sex wedding planning offers, they too will start moving in the direction that New York and the others have gone.

Wedding Planning for same sex marriages is here to stay. And those wedding planning companies that service it seem to be enjoying the welcomed economic relief. Religious groups seem to be coming to terms with gay marriages too. So for now it’s appears to be the political side that has yet to grasp the situation. Once politicians of all strips do, and they always do, we’ll be sure to see additional states approve such legislation.
