St. Patrick’s Day Party Fails (Comedy Video)

Happy St. Patrick's Day cloverSt. Patrick’s Day officially started in the early 17th century. It’s recognized as an official holiday in Ireland (naturally). Even here in North America, it’s an official holiday in Newfoundland, Canada. Of course on March 17th of each year we all become a little more Irish – and green.

What is St. Patrick’s Day about?

When we think of St. Patrick’s Day, the more common items that pop into our minds are the green food and green beer. Yes, it’s pretty much the only day of the year where it would be considered acceptable to drink green beer and eat green food. It really is a celebration of all things Irish.

Here in North America, and especially in the more Irish cities such as New York and Chicago, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a parade followed by the usual fun fair at a local pub. And, as green is synonymous with Ireland, everything about St. Patrick’s Day decorations has to do with green. In Chicago, even the water goes green.

Of course when there is a little more cheer than normal involved things can, how shall we say this, sometimes get carried away. In the video below, from Huffington Post, take a look at some of the more humorous aspects of St. Patrick’s Day. Pretty safe to say that perhaps the people here were enjoying themselves a little too much.

From all of us here at Plan an Event, we wish you a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Try not to become part of next year’s video compilation. But enjoy yourselves!

Easter Party Planning and Fun!

four year old hand drawn pink easter bunny

When knee deep into winter I am always looking for signs that spring is on the way; an unusually warm day, the groundhog and his shadow or Easter just around the corner. In my mind when Easter arrives so does spring and is a perfect time to start holiday party planning.  While Easter is a religious holiday for some, for others it’s all about traditions and family. And no matter what your religion Easter can be a time of laughter and joy. Growing up my family did not celebrate Easter but we never felt left out as every year we received a shoebox filled with Easter goodies. Proving no matter the age or beliefs many kids look forward to the party fun, the Easter bunny, Easter eggs and yes yummy treats.

There really are loads of party planning ideas to ensure your Easter celebration is not only picture-perfect but organized and joy filled as well. And with a bit of creativity and resourcefulness that fun-filled, stress-free party can easily be planned and loved by all; kids and adults alike.

Easter Party Planning – The Decorations

Of course an Easter party is all about the pastel colors; pink, yellow, green and blue. Decorate the space with themed banners and signs. You can make or purchase Easter bunnies and chicks and place and hang them literally everywhere. And then enhance the space with colorful streamers and lots of balloons. Use the balloons to create bouquets and arrange them around the room. Take baskets and fill them with treats or fake grass and plastic eggs and scatter then around. A visit on-line or to a favorite retailer you will find a variety of Easter bits and pieces that can be used to decorate. One year I made a huge table centerpiece using only Easter themed treats; eggs, chocolate, candy, baskets and are you ready the highlight; Easter Peeps of all colors and it was spectacular (if I do say so myself) and definitely the hit of the party.

Easter Party Planning – Let The Games Begin

What’s an Easter celebration without some entertaining games that guests are certain to enjoy? Party games up the fun ante and are easily adaptable for kids of all ages. The game list is long and for me starts with egg decorating by taking a dyed egg that can be decorated using colored markers, glitter, glue, sequins, stencils, stickers and beads. Set up an Easter egg or scavenger hunt, pin the “tail” on the bunny, jelly bean guess, egg pass and musical chairs. Most party games are easy to revise for Easter, for example take Simon Says and make it the Easter Bunny Says. By including some of these entertaining, keep them busy games you are this close to Easter party fun!

Easter Party Planning – The Goody Bag

If you’ve read any of my past blogs you know for me it’s all about the treats and goody bags. Whenever possible and appropriate I always, always provide goody bags for guests. Planning and hosting a party can cost, but have no fear, goody bags can be organized without breaking the bank. And with so much available, this time of year is the perfect time for goody bag delights. A recipe for success is to have “a little of this and a little of that”. Enhance the Easter chocolate and candy with other Easter themed toys and trinkets. The delicious chocolate and candy will be the first to go but the toys will provide hours of amusement.

No matter the type of celebration, party planning can be a costly and stressful scenario. These days with so much help on-line and at our local retailers we can turn it around and make it a most eggcellent experience. So with Easter just around the corner get party planning.

3 Fun New Years Eve Party Ideas for Kids

New Year's Eve party ideas for kids

While many of you are still thinking about the Christmas holiday, New Year’s Eve is also right around the corner. When we think of New Year’s Eve, many of us think of adult themed parties. But, more and more, many people are starting to plan New Year’s Eve parties with their kids.

And this isn’t a new trend.

I remember, as a child, being very excited about New Year’s Eve. My parents had decided that rather than leave us with a babysitter on the big end of the year night, that they would make us apart of the big celebration. And we had a blast. Most of the activities centered around homemade games and, of course, lots of great snacks.

Many Venue Prices Seem to Increase on New Year’s Eve

I think another factor that has a lot of people reconsidering their New Year’s Eve options is that a lot of venues have a prearranged party at a preset price. Not that there’s anything wrong with this format. I’ve been in the hotel industry for many years where we used to organize several various parties throughout our outlets. And they were always very popular.

When you’re planning a party that involves young people it’s always a good idea to have activities planned out ahead of time. It’s not like an adult party were we’re very comfortable networking with each other. Generally at these types of parties the events and activities unfold as they happen. In other words adults do not have to have every moment of a party structured for them.

Three New Year’s Eve party ideas

I’m sure many parents have no trouble thinking of activities that their children would want to do. Not being a parent myself, I talked to a few colleagues that told me they’re planning on staying home with their family New Year’s Eve. Here’s a few of the take away ideas from those conversations for activities that you can implement for your own party:

America’s Got Talent. An easy activity to organize. Basically at the beginning of the party tell the participants that they need to think up and then rehearse a small act that they can perform later in the evening. Trust me, children will not have a problem with this. Whether it be magic acts, a song performance or some other type of acrobatic act, the children will have a blast performing and the adults will have just as much fun watching. You’ll have to assign some judges for the competitions (but you can also make sure that everybody wins a little something…).

Name That Tune. This one I even remember doing as a kid. This one is also an easy one to implement. Obviously the selection of songs need to be recognizable by the participants. But after that it’s simply a matter of lining up the songs, playing a couple of seconds of them, and watching the contestants try to name the song they’re listening to.

Charades. This one almost speaks for itself. There are even many boardgames that are centered around this activity. This activity is a great group activity (and whenever I played charades I appreciated being part of a group and not left on my own).

These posts also provide additional party ideas:

For all of the activities listed above, you will want to have prizes that you can give away. That’s a task that you can split amongst all of the adults that will be attending.

New Year’s Eve is becoming, more and more so, and evening for children just as much as for adults. Many of us are opting for house parties as opposed to going out for the big night. For those that are hosting New Year’s Eve party for kids, it’s important to remember to organize some activities ahead of time. Then make sure you communicate to all the participants what will be happening and, for the adult crowd, what they can contribute to the big night.

Birthday Cake Party Planning Prank (comedy video)

Party planners know all too well that the birthday cake plays a major part of planning birthday parties. Birthday party planning often involves the element of surprise. Quite often, when planning a surprise, the opposite can happen and the surprise ends up being on the unsuspecting participants.

Party Planning Pranks Done in Good Taste Can Be Quite Funny

Who doesn’t like a good clean prank? It always seems to be that the prank is carried out on someone that is just trying to be helpful. But a prank that doesn’t insult or attack anyone is often received with humor.

Case in point. In the video below the prank unfolds as a stranger tries to help a party planner (in this case in the form of a clown) deliver the birthday goods and, in particular, the birthday cake with lit candles. Well, you’ll just have to watch the video below to see how it all unfolds…

Planning a Bachelorette Party 101!

poster with bachelorette party items and the words bacelorette party

Like all parties a bachelorette party is supposed to be fun filled and easy peasy to plan. But if you’re not sure where to start, coordinating and planning, can become a nerve racking and oh so not fun experience. So what’s supposed to be a great experience becomes a not so great nightmare.

These days’ bachelorette parties have become so much more imaginative and creative. Gone are the days when planning a bachelorette party meant inviting some guests, decorating your pad, putting out some food, playing a couple of games and opening gifts. While in the past this fit the bill, these days the name of the game is celebration, friendship and a whole bunch of merriment.

Planning a Bachelorette Party 101 – Time to Get Started!

Most of us has had the honor of planning this oh so special soiree for that oh so special person in our life. Usually the responsibility of bachelorette party planning lies with the Maid of Honor and can seem very intimidating. But by planning ahead and being prepared not only will save you time and energy but most importantly will help you to plan a wonderfully stress free celebration.

Like with so many other areas in life, we woman characteristically are not attracted to the same kind of experience men are. Rumor has it that we are more interested in joyful group activities and fun and less about individual gratification. Go figure!

Planning a Bachelorette Party 101 – Planning, Budgets and Themes, Oh My!

It really makes no difference who the party planning is for; sister, mother, friend or your absolute BFF, the ultimate goal for us all is a happy bride. If you are about to tackle a bachelorette party here are some hints to get started.

The big question always seems to be “what to plan, what to plan” for the big shindig? Plan an event to fit the individuality of the bride. Design an experience based on the guest of honor’s likes and wants, style and grace and of course her absolute favorites. Seek help from the bridesmaids. Have a conversation and find out what their thinking and wanting. And then you will be able to plan an event that the bride and guests will enjoy from start to finish and will be remembered with a smile.

As mentioned a time or two and in an attempt to not sound to repetitive, the next hint is to create a budget. Of course the ultimate goal is to throw the best bachelorette party ever, but not everyone can afford the best of everything. Those in the “know” say it’s traditional for the guests to cover the cost of the bachelorette party. So it is imperative when planning for the host (you) to not only remember this but to ensure the guests are aware of this too. There are a couple of important things to bear in mind when establishing the budget; the guest list as well as the guest’s fiscal situation. The cost of a bachelorette party will vary and hinge on many factors including the kind of event, how many guests, location, activity and entertainment and don’t forget to include a guesstimate for food, drinks, admissions and transportation.

So you’ve had the appropriate conversations and have started a budget, now it’s all about the theme. Once you choose your “just perfect” theme in a perfect world all the other plans will follow. The theme will be the foundation and the root for all things bachelorette party. You can make it as laid-back or as crazy as you see fit. But the facts are the facts and the most creative and inspired themes usually make for the greatest parties. So when trying to come up with that just right theme always keep the bride and her personality in mind. Every bride is special and unique and therefore have no fear so is every party.

The list of ideas for planning a great bachelorette party is literally endless. There really are so many fun things to do depending on the type of party you want to plan. And like with any event you aren’t going to satisfied everyone. But as long as the guest of honor is happy and has a great time, then the celebration is a success! So be creative and celebrate the next step in the bride’s life!

Event and Party Planning Tip-Attractions and Budgets

event and party planning tips on tours and attractions

Event planners have a very difficult task in today’s economy. You see, since our economic downturn (I guess that’s a nice way of saying depression) event planners have had pretty much the same job task. Except that their job got a lot tougher. Wonder why? Well the plus to all of this is that many organizations are still proceeding with their meetings and conferences. On the downside (this is where I’m getting to where the event planner’s job got tough) event planners were, and are now, tasked with providing exciting programs with a reduced budget. If that seems impossible then welcome to the world of event and party planning. These people earn their money tenfold.

Event and Party Planners Can Still Have Their Cake and Eat It Too

For this post I’m offering a basic tip that will still allow event and party planners to offer a tour or an attraction as part of their event and party planning. Many times, clients will offer tours that are attractive enough to help encourage delegates (and their spouses) to attend meetings. And this is where the challenge begins for the event planner. Whether it’s a spouse tour or a general program tour, many include lunch. And, I have to admit, the easiest way to trim a budget, especially for tours, is to eliminate the food component. There’s no doubt you’ll save a bundle by eliminating a meal.

But, what you do if your client is insistent on offering a meal during the tour?

Well, here’s a quick and easy way that I have worked around this task with past clients. If food is a must then look at attractions which also offer food and beverage. The simple reason that I’m saying this is that, quite often, if you bring your group to a particular attraction and are going to feed the group at this attraction, then you are in a position to negotiate on the attraction admission cost. There are times where I have been able to eliminate the cost of the attraction altogether if I keep my group there for a meal. So, in a sense, what I’m doing is still providing the attraction and I’m still providing a meal without having to pay for the admission to the attraction. Your client will be happy because they are getting exactly what they asked for. And you are going to look like a star because you provided what your client had asked for and you were able to trim the budget at the same time.

A win, win for sure!

So for any event and party planners out there that are working on programs that include tours and meals, try looking at attractions that have a restaurant on site. It’s a quick and easy way to provide your client with both an attraction tour as well as a meal. And you’ll look like a superstar because you been able to do this while keeping the cost within budget.
