Donald Trump-Event Promoter?

It seems we’re seeing “The Donald” a lot more as of late. I know, I know. He seems to be a spokesperson for a lot of companies lately. And he’s also a major contributor and supporter to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. We’ll see how that pays off down the road, won’t we.

Careful What You Ask for, Especially When Promoting Political Events

I am going to give you a little tip here on how to promote an event – never ask a question that you really don’t know the answer to. Or another way of putting it is; never ask a question that can potentially lead to embarrassing answers.

Often, as part of political events, the candidate will offer themselves to the winner of a contest. Of course these types of promotions are done as ways of raising campaign money. Certainly nothing wrong as many politicians will do this to raise the much-needed campaign funds.

Donald Trump Is Learning How to Promote an Event the Hard Way

Promoting an event, or rather how to promote an event, can be a difficult task and can take some mastering. Unfortunately, for Mr. Trump, it seems he’s not taking the time to learn how to promote events properly.

The Romney campaign decided that it would run an event promotion to have dinner with Mitt Romney and Donald Trump. To Republican voters this could be enough of a draw to make them want to contribute to Mitt Romney’s campaign. At least that was the hopes of the campaign itself. So Mr. Trump took to Twitter (he seems to like twitter as of late) and posed the following question:

Donald Trump promoting an event on twitter

Now, again, it’s not so much about the event itself. With this, it’s more about the way the question is posed. Or, more importantly, it’s about the question itself that was posed. As you can guess, twitter world went abuzz with people answering Mr. Trump’s question. And I’m sure you can guess, most of the answers are not even fit to print in this article. So instead I am posting a link so that you go and take a look yourself (but don’t forget I did warn you). Click here to see the twitter community’s answers to Donald Trump’s question.

With event promotion communication is the key. But the take away here is that you’d better be careful what you ask for because you just may get the answers that are really on everybody’s mind.

Political Current Events-For Fox Sakes, Not Again!

For the media, there’s often a fine line between reporting the news and becoming the news. Case in point -on May 30th one of the more reputable 24-hour news stations (yes I’m being satirical here), Fox News, aired a video billed as portraying Obama’s first term in office. Well, since then, all hell has broken loose in media circles. You see, apparently, this event promotion turns out to be nothing more than a propaganda video aimed at drawing support for Obama’s competitor, Mitt Romney, in the upcoming election.

Political Events Are a Great Study on How to Promote an Event

In politics, like meeting and event planning, the name of the game often boils down to promoting the event. In meeting and event planning, the event can be a conference where you need to get word out so that it is well attended. Political events are no different. Except what they’re trying to promote is the candidate as the event itself. And let’s face it whoever gets the most people out usually crosses the finish line first.

Media organizations are expected to remain relatively neutral. However, it’s becoming more and more frequent in the US for media organizations to pick sides and then do whatever they can to promote their candidate, or the event. Without going into too much detail here, what media organizations have to be careful of is crossing the line and becoming a medium that promotes instead of reports. Fox News likes to bill itself as being fair and balanced. Unfortunately that couldn’t be further from the truth. They barely hide their tactics any longer.

Here is the video in question that was aired on “Fox and Friends” on May 30.

Before you say that it’s just the liberal media having an issue, the video in question was also panned by many conservative commentators as well. As usual, a senior Fox News executive later issued a statement saying that the deed was done by an associate producer and that person was not authorized to do so. Ohhhhhh, I see… Not my business but maybe Fox had better take a long hard look at its internal policies and revisit the section that states who is allowed to put content on the air.

Just sayin.

It seems that many news organizations will justify their lame attempt at reporting by putting a “?” after certain controversial news stories. I guess, to them, the “?” makes it legitimate. Let me show you an example of how this can be utilized. Say, for example, somebody reading this post decides that they don’t like Plan an Event. So they put a blog up on their site titled “Is plan an event trying to destroy the meeting planning industry?”. You see, by adding the “?” at the end of that phrase gets them off the hook for any slanderous comments. Then in the article all they would have to do is state that according to rumors that they’ve heard, such and such is doing such and such and therefore by all accounts destroying the meeting planning industry. You see where I’m ongoing here…. A slippery path.

Political event promotion can be a dirty game at the best of times. It’s a sad fact of world we live in today. Having said that, I’m going to be following the upcoming presidential election with fascination. First, it’s an excellent study on how to, whether correctly or incorrectly, promote an event. As for Fox News, well they too are an excellent study. I’m sure we haven’t seen the end of these little “mishaps”. We’ll just have to wait until November to see how effective they were at getting their candidate promoted the most.

Convention Planning Security-Meeting Planners Show Concern for Concealed Gun Laws

Okay, you know the world is getting crazier when delegates CANNOT BRING lumber, hatchets, gas mask, chains, and super soakers to a convention but they ARE ALLOWED to bring concealed guns. Yep, you read it correctly, of all the things that are on the list of what you can’t bring to an upcoming convention in Tampa, concealed guns is not one of them. The convention planning that we are talking about is, ironically, the Republican National Convention.

This year is a presidential election year in the US. And as part of that process the major parties both host conventions where they announce and/or confirm their leaders. Obviously the Democrats will host Pres. Obama in his bid to win re-election. And, as it’s pretty much all over but the writing, the Republicans will present Mr. Romney as their candidate to take on Pres. Obama for the Oval Office. Florida and North Carolina have been selected by the respective parties to host their conventions. Florida and North Carolina also have laws which allow concealed weapons.

Security Has Become a Large Part of Convention Planning

Convention planning is a daunting task. Just read a few of our other blog post here and you’ll quickly get an idea of just how diverse the job of the convention planner really is. However, as most meeting planners will tell you, the security of their delegates is top priority.

So you could understand why the convention planners and organizers for the Republican National Convention are showing concern over Florida’s concealed weapon law. And under most other circumstances I can give them that argument without any irony being applied. But not this convention. You see it’s the Republicans themselves (with support from some Democrats) that are responsible for these concealed weapon laws that are law in over 20 states. But, as I said above, irony seems to be alive and well with this gang. Last week Tampa’s City Council passed a resolution to ask Republican Gov. Rick Scott to implement a temporary ban on concealed weapons. This is so they can take added precautions to make sure that their delegates and attendees are safer. Isn’t that the goal for politicians all of the time, not just temporarily??

Perhaps Politicians Need a Lesson in Convention Planning Security

Some meeting and convention planners, that I’ve spoken with, tell me that they are outraged that a political organization can be exempt from a particular law but not their own conferences. Now, I do understand that there are a lot of high profile and powerful leaders that will attend the Republican and Democrat conventions. So does this mean that the convention planners and organizers for the political parties think that the concealed weapon law is okay for 99.9% of the conventions and their delegates but should be temporarily pre-empted when their conventions roll into town?

I guess the saying “it would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic” is appropriate for this situation. From my take, I think that if the lawmakers think that this law is appropriate in their respective states, then they should put their money where their mouth is. Otherwise, perhaps these conventions will also show these lawmakers that wanting a little security for your delegates doesn’t mean you are in violation of the second amendment.

I would be very interested to find out from meeting planners, that are hosting meetings in states where concealed weapons are allowed, exactly what their thoughts are regarding security and how it relates to their convention planning.

In the Event Planning Business Is Any News Always Good News?

There’s an old saying that no news is bad news. And in the event planning business we also used to say that any coverage is good coverage. Which begs the question -  are there really no times when press, especially bad press, is bad for the event planning business?

Not Everyone Would Agree That There Is No Bad Press That in Event Planning Business Could Get

I was reading an article on Huffington Post yesterday when I saw an article about GOP candidate, and current Texas governor, Rick Perry. When I was reading the article I literally had no idea that I would use the bases of that article for my blog post today. The article in question was a link to a Washington Post piece regarding Rick Perry’s Texas hunting spot. The Perry family purchased a hunting lodge in West Texas a few decades ago. Now you’re thinking what could possibly be wrong with the GOP candidate, in particular, owning a hunting lodge. Well if it was just that there would be absolutely nothing wrong. But if you’re a person trying to become the GOP’s presidential candidate for next year’s election this is a story that you probably would rather not talk about. In particular the article states that the camp was referred to by a nickname – a nickname which today is commonly referred to as the N-word by people that would rather not say this disgusting word. It seems the issue in question is when did the Perry family remove that disgusting name and start calling the hunting Lodge by its proper name. Gov. Perry has openly said that the name (which was displayed on a large placeholder rock) is an “offensive name that has no place in the modern world”. I couldn’t agree more. However any time that a candidate is put on the defense is not a good situation – especially for a potential presidential candidate.

Running Rick Perry’s campaign is similar to an event planning business. All of his handlers have to be particularly careful of every event that they plan and every word that the governor is saying publicly. As well, like an event planning business, it’s their responsibility to project the governor as a viable contender. Pretty safe to say they do not want to be wasting precious airtime putting out fires such as this.

Be Careful What You Wish for in the Event Planning Business

Similarly, in the event planning business, it’s the event planners responsibility to execute successful meetings and events for their clients. Sometimes it’s crucial event planning businesses get exposure for their clients. And people would often say that any press is good press. However analyzing the story regarding Gov. Perry and his link to a racial issue, I would say that that’s not always the case. As an event planner if you’re put on the defense by having to defend your client or their actions you’re wasting valuable time in providing the real service that the client hired you to do.

Only time will tell how this will fan out for Gov. Perry and whether or not he’ll go on and be the Republican presidential candidate for the 2012 election. But it’s pretty safe to say that if he doesn’t fade from the limelight neither will this story. So for those of you seeking exposure and press coverage a word of caution – be careful what you wish for.

Same Sex Wedding Planning Means Big Bucks To New York State

On June 24th New York became the 7th State to allow same sex couples to marry. As soon as the Marriage Equality Act was signed by Governor Cuomo, news outlets started reporting on what that would mean for the state’s economy. Same sex wedding planning began almost immediately. For those that thought that this legislation would be a disaster for the state, they may want to think again.

Same Sex Wedding Planning Companies are Seeing Revenues Increase

It looks like there will be no looking back as far as the state’s economy is concerned. Already there are reports that same sex wedding planning will contribute about $180 million to the economy over the next three years alone. According to a Forbes.com article, gay wedding planning companies are already reporting on the additional business coming their way. To many of these wedding planning companies the new law is certainly something they welcome. Especially in this economy.  NYC & Company, New York City’s official tourism marketing agency is already underway with a new marketing campaign – NYC I DO. The Marriage Equality Act is expected to add thousands of new jobs to the tourism industry.

Will Politics Have an Impact on Gay Wedding Planning?

So if this new legislation is bringing welcome relief to New York’s economy, then why are only 7 states allowing same sex marriages? Religion? Unfortunately the answer appears to be “politics”.  While a lot of religious groups do take a definite stand against same sex marriages, most of the main stream religions tend to be more tolerant towards same sex couples. Several even allow openly gay ministers. In politics, sadly, there seems to be more of mind set that you’re either for it or you’re against it. Ironically, New York’s deciding vote in favor of this landmark bill was cast by a Republican from Buffalo. A prominent ex-politician, Hillary Clinton (she states her status to be a civil servant now), has called this vote “historic”.

“So far as the United States is concerned and our foreign policy, and our values . . . gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” Clinton told gay foreign affairs workers.

So perhaps politics is the reason only 7 states currently allow gay marriage.  As other states start seeing the economic benefits that same sex wedding planning offers, they too will start moving in the direction that New York and the others have gone.

Wedding Planning for same sex marriages is here to stay. And those wedding planning companies that service it seem to be enjoying the welcomed economic relief. Religious groups seem to be coming to terms with gay marriages too. So for now it’s appears to be the political side that has yet to grasp the situation. Once politicians of all strips do, and they always do, we’ll be sure to see additional states approve such legislation.

Have Event Planning Firms Soured on Arizona?

Grand Canyon, Arizona. The canyon, created by the Colorado River over 6 million years, is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 24 kilometers), and attains a depth of more than a mile (1.6 km). Arizona, USA. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Last year Arizona implemented a controversial law that affects how that state deals with immigration issues. The law basically makes it a misdemeanor if an individual is not able to prove that they are a US resident. The controversial component, for many, is that the individual must provide documentation when requested by authorities. A year later, we’re wondering what affect that law has had on event planning firms.

Event Planning Firms Take the Pulse of Their Clients Before Pitching Arizona

The Arizona immigration law itself has received a ton of coverage in the news since it was signed by Governor Brewer. The main reason that event planning firms were (and are) taking notice is because many of th

The Actions of Event Planning Firms have Economic Impacts

In May of 2010, HotelNewsNow.com reported that hoteliers in Arizona were feeling the impact as they claimed event planning firms were cancelling their meetings as a result of the law. In the same article, they actually name a specific group that cancelled and tagged a loss from that group of approximately $120,000. Additionally, Phoenix city officials estimate that their city will lose $90 million over the next five years.

What concerned tourism officials was the impact event planning firms could have on the tourism industry in Arizona.  And they weren’t letting much time go by without taking action.  Major initiatives were underway lobbying industry associations for their support.   Many took the form of support for the industry workers that were in jeopardy of losing their jobs if any boycotts started to take hold. Certainly this was a better way to frame the argument rather than having to wade into the political arena.

The USA Today article listed the potential ramifications.  With the word “Boycott” in the title, this was certainly not an article that tourism officials in Arizona were pleased to read.

What’s happening in Arizona is closely being watched by several other states tourism officials where their own governments are reviewing similar action.

With appeals, the Arizona immigration law has yet to see many of the controversial elements take effect.  Recently a federal appeals court refused to lift a stay on many of these elements. It will be interesting to see how many event planning firms will be watching and what effect it will have on this year’s tourism in Arizona.
