Same Sex Wedding Planning Means Big Bucks To New York State

On June 24th New York became the 7th State to allow same sex couples to marry. As soon as the Marriage Equality Act was signed by Governor Cuomo, news outlets started reporting on what that would mean for the state’s economy. Same sex wedding planning began almost immediately. For those that thought that this legislation would be a disaster for the state, they may want to think again.

Same Sex Wedding Planning Companies are Seeing Revenues Increase

It looks like there will be no looking back as far as the state’s economy is concerned. Already there are reports that same sex wedding planning will contribute about $180 million to the economy over the next three years alone. According to a Forbes.com article, gay wedding planning companies are already reporting on the additional business coming their way. To many of these wedding planning companies the new law is certainly something they welcome. Especially in this economy. NYC & Company, New York City’s official tourism marketing agency is already underway with a new marketing campaign – NYC I DO. The Marriage Equality Act is expected to add thousands of new jobs to the tourism industry.

Will Politics Have an Impact on Gay Wedding Planning?

So if this new legislation is bringing welcome relief to New York’s economy, then why are only 7 states allowing same sex marriages? Religion? Unfortunately the answer appears to be “politics”. While a lot of religious groups do take a definite stand against same sex marriages, most of the main stream religions tend to be more tolerant towards same sex couples. Several even allow openly gay ministers. In politics, sadly, there seems to be more of mind set that you’re either for it or you’re against it. Ironically, New York’s deciding vote in favor of this landmark bill was cast by a Republican from Buffalo. A prominent ex-politician, Hillary Clinton (she states her status to be a civil servant now), has called this vote “historic”.

“So far as the United States is concerned and our foreign policy,and our values . . . gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” Clinton told gay foreign affairs workers.

So perhaps politics is the reason only 7 states currently allow gay marriage. As other states start seeing the economic benefits that same sex wedding planning offers, they too will start moving in the direction that New York and the others have gone.
