How the Olympics Can Teach Us an Important Lesson About Event Planning (Video)

Are you one of the gazillions watching the Olympics? On the way to work this morning I was thinking about the Olympics and all the event planners and event planning that must be required for this ultimate success. And like millions and millions of people, when I can, I am glue to the TV screen. Watching all the unbelievable athletes strive to reach the pinnacle in their sport. We’re number one, two or three! There have been tears and laughter, highs and lows and we have watched them revel in an incredible range of emotions.

Event Planning and the Olympics …Work, Work, Work!

I know all the effort and hours it takes to plan an annual meeting. And can only imagine the amount of time, hard work and total lack of sleep it has taken all those wonderfully amazing event and meeting planners to pull this one off. As we all know, with any big event, some things will go perfectly and some may be a little less than perfect. And talk about stress, with so many different elements to plan, oversee and execute as well as coordinating the terrific volunteers and unwavering front line staff, all while the world is watching. And as all planners know event staff is the backbone to event planning. Back of the house planning and front line staff truly do go hand and hand when it comes to successful meetings and events.

The relationship between planner and staff is a very important one. My front line staff has saved my butt more times than I can remember. I treat them as I would want to be treated if I were in their position and working for me. I also am sure that they have the knowledge and resources to perform the job at hand. And also ensure they know everything and I do mean EVERYTHING. Basically my brain is their brain. By taking these steps you make sure they know you respect their work and in turn they have the information and know-how to perform tasks and are able to react on site in the best possible way.

The Olympics definitely has some great people working the events. One personality filled employee did her best to keep those arriving for an event entertained. So be ready to enjoy, with thanks to The Sun newspaper and to a great front line staff person that some are calling the happiest Olympic worker.
